Living in Full Flow – how eating colourful foods can help you – body, mind & spirit

Here Sarah invites you to take a holistic look at your food choices through the lens of the chakras, so you can discover how colour may be the missing link to optimising your health and wellbeing and living a vibrant, balanced life.
What is the food–chakra-colour connection?
The chakra system originated in India between 1500 and 500 BC in the oldest text called the Vedas and comprises seven focal points for meditation on the human body. These seven points can be perceived as subtle energy centres and, when they are open and aligned, our energy is free-flowing and we feel well and vibrant.
Each chakra has its own vibrational frequency and colour and corresponds to specific organs in the body, as well as physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual states of being.
We think of food firstly as fuel for our physical bodies – and rightly so. Food is at the core of physical health, and the evidence base validating the importance to your health of eating a variety of fruit and vegetables in the diet is undebatable.
In my nutrition practice, I talk about ‘eating a rainbow’ as I believe this is a beautiful, relatable way to inspire people to consume plenty of fruit, vegetables and other plant-based foods, and ultimately to benefit from the whole spectrum of nutrients these foods contain.
There is one specific group of nutrients called phytonutrients which is particularly interesting. These are the plant-based compounds and what gives foods their natural colours. And whilst we get less than a teaspoon of phytonutrients on a daily basis, they have a beneficial impact on reducing
inflammation, balancing our stress response and improving our insulin sensitivity – all things which in turn help create the internal environment for our body to thrive.
Soul food
As well as supporting our health and healing, it’s also my belief that food provides energy to nourish ALL aspects of our being including our mental and emotional health too. If you’ve ever eaten too much of a food which doesn’t agree with you, then you’ll have first-hand experience of how that can negatively affect your mood and energy. And conversely, how eating other foods can help you better maintain your focus and clarity. What’s more, at a spiritual level, could it be that by eating foods with similar frequencies and colours, any blocked chakras will open and the energy will flow more harmoniously, in turn influencing multiple areas of your life? This is the foundation of my latest programme with Sleek, ‘Living in Full Flow: 21-day Mind-body Nutrition Plan’ in which we work to nourish each chakra with corresponding food and movement
For example, if you are imbalanced in your solar plexus chakra – which is yellow in colour and represents energy, personal power, action and esteem – then you may be feeling stressed-out or exhausted right now. It could also be that you’re eating too much sugar and not enough legumes, whole-grains or fresh yellow-coloured foods such as lemons, bananas, sweetcorn, yellow peppers or ginger.
Or if you are imbalanced in your heart chakra – which is green in colour, you may be neglecting your own needs and self-care. This chakra represents love, expansion and compassion and physically relates to your chest, back arms and wrists. Help nourish this chakra with regular hearty servings of healing green foods such as spinach, rocket, avocado and asparagus. And get your energy flowing freely through this area with the Ballerina Back & Arms – Heart Chakra Workout. This and all 7 of the beautiful chakras workouts that accompany this plan are included in Sleek Ballet Fitness subscription.
Making a few colourful tweaks to help balance your food choices in line with your chakra imbalances could help you start to get your energy and confidence back, and feel a ripple across the rest of your health and wellbeing.
